Check for updates on your devices!

Recently I wrote a Tech Tip “Change that default password on your IoT Devices, Firewalls and Modems”. Hopefully you’ve taken that to heart and taken steps to make sure that’s been addressed. Now, the next thing is making sure they are kept up to date! Did you know that the manufacturer’s of these devices provide updates to make improvements (often related to security)? Many people don’t think about all of the devices on their office (and home) networks and even when they do they may not realize that many of them need updates just like your computer. Network Switches, Wireless Access Points, Printers, TVs, VoIP Phones, Security Cameras and more are on networks today and soon many other devices will be coming. Experts predict that by 2025 there will be as many as 75 Billion connected IoT (Internet of Things) devices.

Check the support website for your device make and model to find out about updates to the firmware that’s available. Or, check with your MSP or IT Provider to confirm they have a plan in place for updates. Here are a few of the more popular support sites to get you going in the right direction. A Google Search of the Brand and Model will generally return the support website.
